New RWE Campus to become heart of 'Innovation City Essen'

RWE has decided how to design its new corporate headquarters in the north of Essen: Together with the RWE Supply & Trading buildings and the modernised administrative building of the Victoria Mathias mine, three separate three-to-four-storey buildings will form the campus on the outskirts of the Essen Nordstadt district. Construction is scheduled for completion in the spring of 2020, with occupancy slated for the summer. "Our new head office will offer our employees creative and communicative work options. We will design the office space to satisfy the needs arising from a rapidly changing working world," emphasises RWE CEO Rolf Martin Schmitz.

Altenessener Straße is the gateway to the Elting district. As part of the 'Innovation City Essen' concept, the district is being revitalised and connected to the northern part of the inner city. "I am pleased that RWE will lastingly support this urban development process around the north of the city with its new corporate headquarters," declares Essen's mayor Thomas Kufen. He further states, "This is also a clear commitment by the company to Essen as a business site. I look forward to continuing being good neighbours."

The company with a 119 year history, had taken up its initial operations at Altenessener Straße. RWE intends to continue writing its corporate history from this traditional venue. The focus in this context lies on sustainable solutions for security of supply in line with the company's claim'Powering. Reliable. Future.' The campus can accommodate a good 2,000 employees. With over 20,000 square meters in floor space, the three new, modern office buildings offer enough room for more than 850 work places, most of which are open plan. Energy efficiency is one of the centraldemands placed on the new building. For example, the cooled and heated floors can be climate-controlled depending on the compass points to which the rooms face. The RWE Campus connects perfectly to the existing development of RWE Supply & Trading, Plan H, which already provides room for some 1,100 work places on more than 15,000 square meters. This makes for short distances, affording the employees of RWE AG, power generation and trading fast and uncomplicated ways of striking dialogue. Rapid-transit connections are very good, and an underground car park with 250 as well as a parking structure with 550 parking spaces will also be built. The campus will be implemented by the project development firm Lang & Cie. Rhein-Ruhr Real Estate AG based in Cologne. The company specialises in project development in the Rhine-Ruhr region. It won an architect beauty contest based on its concept. RWE will occupy the campus as a tenant. The project is in the development and approval phase. A computing centre and the canteen at Altenessener Straße have to be dismantled before work on the new buildings can begin.
